Greens get behind unions on global funding

A campaign launched by education unions today against global funding should make the Government carefully consider its next moves on education funding, the Green Party said today.

“Make no mistake, global funding is bad old bulk funding in disguise,” Green Party education spokesperson Catherine Delahunty said today.

“The Government’s global funding model will force schools to make impossibly tough choices, such as allowing larger class sizes or paying the power bill.

“Teachers and educators are on the frontline of our education system, and the Minister needs to engage the sector properly before announcing any funding changes.

“The last time Hekia Parata tried to increase class sizes, there was a revolt around the country by parents, who forced her to back track.

“I have serious concerns about global funding and what it will mean for our young people and their education.

“It will be very difficult for principals to make global funding work without cutting teachers, support staff, and administrative staff at a minimum.

“It doesn't seem to trouble the Education Minister if her proposal results in bigger classes, but she is ignoring the fact that New Zealand parents see class sizes as being critical to the quality of their child’s education.

“Once again, the Minister seems perfectly content with picking a fight with teachers and parents,” said Ms Delahunty.
