Experienced campaigner and party strategist Gareth Hughes is moving on from Parliamentary politics to open a new chapter in his life and focus on his kids.
“It’s been a true privilege to serve as a Green MP in Parliament and support our Party’s journey into Government as our Musterer and Strategist,” Gareth Hughes said.
“After ten years as an MP, and my children knowing nothing but a Parliamentary life, I want to spend more time with them. Even as a Wellington-based MP it’s far from a family-friendly job.
“I’ve loved being a Green MP and I’m proud of the oil and gas offshore exploration ban, ending most fossil fuel subsidies, the 100% renewables target, the campaign to ban shark finning and successfully getting the Country of Origin Food Bill passed.
“Parliament was just one outlet for my activism and I will continue to campaign for stronger climate action, social justice and animal welfare from outside.
“I will not be putting myself forward for the 2020 election and will spend the next period chairing the Social Services and Community Select Committee, working on my portfolios and confidence and supply areas, and supporting our campaign.
“I want to thank my partner and kids for supporting me on this journey, and my Green Party colleagues from over the years who I’ve had the pleasure to work with. The Green Party will be ranking candidates for the Party list early next year and I’m excited to see who will step forward.

From Monday Gareth Hughes MP also passes on the role of Strategist and Musterer and his Agriculture portfolio.
The role of Strategist and Musterer is taken up by Chlöe Swarbrick MP, who passes on her Education portfolio (but retains Tertiary Education) and her seat on the Education Select Committee.
The Education portfolio and Education Select Committee seat are taken up by Golriz Ghahraman MP.
The Agriculture portfolio is taken up by Eugenie Sage MP.
