Green Party kick-start campaign to put the heart back into our social support system

The Green Party is launching a campaign in Auckland to put the heart back into our social support system, so that no one gets left behind, and are urging the community to get involved and come along.

Launches will take place across the country, kick-starting in Auckland, then heading to Wellington, Dunedin and Christchurch.

The launch in Auckland will include talks by a variety of community leaders currently working to reduce poverty in Aotearoa, and will include a speech by Green Co-leader Marama Davidson, with MCing by Green MP Jan Logie.

“We are officially kick-starting our campaign to finally put the heart back into our social support system”, Green Co-leader Marama Davidson said.

“For decades, successive Governments have allowed our social safety net to stagnate and have also deliberately eroded it, meaning individuals, families and children don’t have enough and Kiwis moving in and out of work are worse off.

“This has resulted in entrenched disadvantage, particularly felt among Māori and Pasifika communities, by women, and by people with disabilities. We now have an increasingly unhappy society not flourishing as we should.

“Our confidence and supply agreement commits this government to transform our welfare system. We want as many people as possible to be a part of that conversation, and to put the heart back into our social support system,” Green MP Jan Logie said.

“We want to hear from locals in Auckland and beyond about how removing sanctions and increases in support would help, so that everyone can lead a good life. We want the community to get involved and tautoko this historic opportunity.

“We must work towards an Aotearoa where everyone has enough and lives a decent life. It’s time that we worked together to make this a reality”.
